5 Summer RV Camping Tips & Tricks
With summer officially upon us, we know the people of Salmon Arm are gearing up to finally take their RVs out for a spin. And there’s no doubt that camping road trips are one of the first activities that come to mind. If you’re new to RV life, you might be thinking a successful camping trip is as simple as picking up your gear and heading out on the road. While that is certainly the gist of it, having a few thought-out tips and tricks under your belt can be enough to make or break your RV camping experience. Whether you’re new to the world of RVs or simply want to get the most out of your summer road trips, Country Camping RV is here to offer some helpful tips so your next adventure can go as smoothly as possible.
1. Decide ahead of time what type of campground you want. Campsites differ in size, amenities, and sights, among other things. Make sure to make reservations with camping grounds that align with you and your family’s needs. Not to mention, not every RV party follows common etiquette. To increase the likelihood of having respectful neighbours, careful campground selection in advance is important.
2. Practice driving your RV or towing your travel trailer. Just like when you were learning to drive a car, you want to get a feel for how it drives and how to park it. An RV is larger than a car, so it’s expected that it will handle it differently. Be sure to practice backing up as well since some campgrounds do not offer pull-through spots.
3. Only bring the essentials. When you first get your RV, you revel in the amount of space you have! It feels so much larger than the space you have when you are tent camping. But once you start to fill cabinets and space, that room quickly gets filled if you are not careful. Not only will you want to keep your items organized, but you should also consider only bringing what you really need for your first road trip.
4. Use an offline map. Many places that people want to camp, including many state parks, are outside of regular cellular service range. That is why it is important to grab a paper map of the area you are travelling to. If you find yourself in the middle of nowhere without service, you can still navigate to where you are going. Pro tip: Many RV travel guides are also sold as downloadable digital guides (so you won’t lose it when you lose service).
5. Use resources available to you. Parks Canada runs a Learn to Camp program in partnership with MEC. Participants learn about recreation safety, get camp-cooking tips, and learn how to pitch a tent and build a fire. Other great resources include Camping & RV in BC, AdventureSmart, and the MEC Blog. Get information on camping experiences in BC, safety tips, and inspiration for planning, and be sure to read the “Know Before You Go” section on the BC Parks website.
